John's Cockatoo World
I am Cockatoo
Avian First Aid Videos.
Episode 1. Introduction
Hello Bird lovers,
I have produced some videos about "Avian First Aid".
Dr. Pam Gordy is a well known Avian vet in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She looks after all my birds.
Our local bird rescue association sponsored a first aid seminar. Dr. Gordy was the speaker. She was kind enough to let me film it.
I've broken the footage down into topical episodes for easier search and viewing the episode of your choice.
I'm just a guy with a camera and some software. Critics have mercy.
Episode 2. Being Prepared.
In this segment Dr. Gordy is going to cover "Being prepared" for when your bird has an accident.
Topics include:
How important it is that your bird accept handling.
Tips about your emergency phone numbers and first aid kit.
Getting help from someone as an assistant.
And finally your Veterinary relationship.
Episode 3. Assessing the situation.
What happened? How serious is it? Can YOU handle the situation? What organ system is involved? Are they breathing normally? Does your bird have low blood sugar because of struggling? And of course bleeding.
Episode 4. Transporting your Sick/Injured Bird
Episode 5. Catching Your Bird.
You may need to towel your bird. How to choose a safe area. Choosing your towel. Catch the bird on the floor.
Episode 6. Toweling Demonstrations.
This is my personal favorite episode.
Dr. Gordy demonstrates toweling techniques using the demo birds and "Blue" the parrot. She will also give Blue a quick exam since he had to tolerate the toweling.
For birds like "Tika" who know what toweling is and hate it. They can also start to hate the person doing the toweling. I let Dr. Gordy clip my birds nails so they hate her instead of me. She doesn't have to live with them. I do.
That ends the general first aid portion of these videos. The remaining episodes will deal with common injuries and specific emergencies.
Episode 7. Common Injuries and Specific Emergencies
Dr. Gordy will explain each emergency in 3 stages:
Assess or recognize the situation.
What action to take.
What could have been done to prevent the situation.
This episode: The "most" common injury is bleeding. The "most" common site is a blood feather.
Episode 8. Bleeding/Toes & Legs.
Episode 9. Bleeding/Beaks.
Episode 10. Bleeding/Lacerations.
Treating lacerations and some safety tips to prevent bleeding injuries.
Episode 11. Burns.
